AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is a US chip company based in Santa Clara, California — Intel's long-standing rival. The Ryzen AI 300 series launched in 2024 and became AMD's first dedicated AI PC chip family. It combines AMD's Zen 5 CPU architecture, RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics, and an XDNA 2 NPU — the last of which delivers 50 TOPS of dedicated AI performance, the highest of any x86 chip at launch. The Ryzen AI 400 series launched at CES 2026 with minor spec bumps and a 60 TOPS NPU on the flagship. Both generations run full Windows and have complete x86 app compatibility — no compromises like ARM-based Snapdragon chips. Available in laptops from ASUS, Lenovo, HP, Dell and more.

Honest verdict
What it genuinely does well — and where it falls short
✅ What it's great for
Best all-round Windows AI chipLeads Intel in multi-core performance, has the highest NPU TOPS of any x86 chip, and handles everyday AI workloads exceptionally well. The go-to choice for Windows users who want genuine AI capability.
Full x86 app compatibilityUnlike Snapdragon, every Windows application runs natively — no emulation, no compatibility concerns. A huge practical advantage for everyday use.
Excellent integrated graphicsThe RDNA 3.5 GPU is the best integrated graphics of any x86 laptop chip — capable of light gaming, video editing, and AI image generation without a dedicated GPU.
Great valueRyzen AI 300 laptops offer strong performance at competitive prices. The ASUS Zenbook S16 regularly comes in under £1,200 and outperforms more expensive Intel alternatives.
ROCm support for AI developmentAMD now supports ROCm, allowing developers to run AI training frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow on the GPU — a genuine advantage over Intel for AI developers on a budget.
❌ Where it falls short
Battery life trails Apple and SnapdragonRyzen AI 300 laptops typically manage 10–13 hours. Solid, but noticeably behind the 18–24 hour figures from MacBook Air and Snapdragon X2 devices.
Can't match Apple for local LLMsApple's unified memory architecture still gives the M5 Pro a meaningful edge when running large local AI models. For running 13B+ parameter models locally, Apple wins.
ROCm ecosystem still maturingWhile ROCm support has improved, NVIDIA's CUDA still dominates AI development tools. Some frameworks and tutorials assume CUDA — AMD users may hit occasional compatibility walls.
AI 400 is only a minor upgradeThe Ryzen AI 400 series launched at CES 2026 but is largely a spec bump over the 300 series. If you find a 300 series laptop at a good price, don't feel you're missing out significantly.
